Oh Yeah! That's what I'm talking about! That's one saaawwwwheeeeeeeeet 'old school' board!!! That's gonna look awesome on top of your Woody Mate! Hey! Looks like you picked up one of those neat BMW Car Covers that look like a Woody on the outside! Fits a standard BMW MINI COUPE if I'm not mistaken? Wish they made one identical for an original MKI/MKII Countryman/Traveller. It would have to be quite a bit smaller though. Thanks for sharing the Board with me! Mini Estate
P.S. Hey. Please let me know if I'm mistaken on the Car Cover??? Maybe it does fit a Classic Mini Wagon??? That would be unreal! I'd order one up in a heartbeat! RJT

Doing more digging Chuck. RX Auto Restorations had the shell in their North Vancouver shop for some body work and noticed immediately after blasting that the Countryman had a whole front end welded on (welded through A pillars and base of the toeboard).
They do multi-million dollar Pebble Beach Concourse winners as you know, and their opinion was that the welds were of such an age and quality that they must have been done at the factory. Why?
So an interesting hypothesis emerges...that the Countryman was used in a test crash to affirm the mounting of the external fuel tank. In this case a front end crash. The new nose came from another external tank crash test to the rear with the good bits from the two cars being welded together, sent across the ocean where no one would know for 40 years, if ever.
If this is the case, the Countryman would have been a very early external tank vehicle, an unintended crash test survivor if you like, that was probably built some time before July 1961 and "completed" at the factory on July 19th after it was concluded that the two parts could be spliced together.

Hunter2, Just another of those date conflicts that show up when one digs deeply. The dating of the changeover reared its head a while ago and I certainly haven't heard a good answer, yet. Hopefully, a pattern will develope as more cars are registered with the travellercountrymanregister people. They've discovered some good things about 1959 car identification that way. Let's hope they do as good a job with the estates.
Regarding the LHD/RHD issue, you might see if Heritage would research a few cars each side of your number to see if all were built one way -- either LHD or RHD. From that you could assume either their research was incorrect or your car's tag was not stamped correctly. Did the Heritage information include a selling point? Was the car sent to a North America distribution point?

Hi Ya Smurf!
Just browsing through some of the messages, and noticed the point you made about posting (also) the colors for the external tank Mini Tinnies and Woodies. I also appreciated Bill's response. Good points from both parties. I guess I was just thinking about the color I would be submitting to the Registry for my 1967 MKI Austin Mini Countryman! (1969 Jaguar 'Carmine Red' -paint code #8311LH). It might seem a bit out of place listed amongst the original "Factory" color Minis, (them crazy kids these days and their "custom" paint) HA! P.S. '69 Jaguar 'Carmine Red' on a Jag >>>>>>>>>>>>>>

QUESTIONS:
The Austin Countryman I have has tag and documentation to be identifying it as A-AW7 - 140141 with a build date of July 19th, 1961 according to Heritage Motor Centre.
Since the "L" for lefthand drive is NOT stamped on the Vin plate but shows in the HMC records, maybe it was a LHD Woody when it left Longbridge. Vins on record without the "L" were RHD.
However, I don't have the front end steel (front end was removed before I acquired the shell) with Body Number stamped on the righhand side of the slam panel to tie the shell to the Vin and production date.
Moreover the estateandcountrymanminiregister team say that they have records of vehicles with the internal tank being built later (later Vin sequence and build dates than my external tank shell) in July 1961.
The external tank Estate/Countryman was available in September of 1961, so...the question arises, were both external and internal tank vehicles being built in July 1961.
Was the factory using up stocks on hand while building the new model?
Any expert help out there?

Macm: according to Pressnell's research, the issue was how to keep an LWB estate level when fully loaded. The headlights could have been used to spot low flying airplanes! Besides longer pipes and hydro subrames and finding displacers that still work, one would have to come up with a different place to mount the shrader valves to fill the system. There is no access to the rear subframe's rear bar.
Thanks for posting COS. That was last year at MM in Winona. And the car was driven there via Pike's Peak and other adventures. I believe it was also the fastest Mini at the autocross that didn't show up on a trailer.
By the way, the red over white color scheme is correct for that car. Two-tone was optional on the Mk I and II South African Countryman.
