Exclusive from Mini Mania! For your 1098cc Morris Minor or Sprite and Midget. If you are tired of dripping oil onto your driveway and clutch, this crankshaft rear seal kit is the real thing. It allows you to replace the scroll seal with a real rubber seal! A special aluminum casting bolts right on to the block with no fabrication required. RIC778 (1098cc), Replacement seals only are available as RIC778/S.

The stock factory engine uses a 'scroll seal' which is not really a seal at all but simply a technique to try to keep the oil from not getting out from a rotating surface. There is no maintenance possible on the stock set up as it actually is a metal to metal system with no replacable parts involved. As it wears the engine simply leaks! This video was done on a 1275cc engine, but the installation is the same.

Crank Rear Oil Seal Conversion 948cc/1098cc. This kit is for 948 and 1098cc Morris Minor engines only with the engine code beginning 9M, 10MA or 10ME. It will not fit 948 or 1098cc Midget or Sprite engines with the engine code beginning 9C or 10C. For 1098cc Midget/Sprite engines use part no. RIC778. Please note: This conversion is intended as an upgrade for the A-series engine for fitment during a full engine rebuild. It will not work as a "bandaid" to completely eliminate oil leaks on a worn engine.

Question:
I’ve test fitted my aluminum top plate (that replaces the top half of the scroll seal) and it extends further from the engine than the bottom half of the scroll seal (on the rear main cap) by 0.012” or about 1/3 of a mm as measured with a feeler gauge. Is that going to be too large a gap to maintain a seal? 1275 midget engine
Answer:
I don't think this will be an issue but you should definitely fill the gap with sealant. Sealant should be used all around the outside of the seal holder (not the inside where the seal sits), too. Just make sure the areas where the sealant goes is 100% grease and oil-free or the sealant will be ineffective.

There's a number on the fork - for 1275cc applications it should be 22G168. I would confirm you've got the correct fork and not the earlier 2A3406 out of a smoothcase gearbox. The release bearings are specific to 1275, as well. Confirm that all the parts are for the ribcase gearbox and not the earlier smoothcase. Mixing and matching will cause issues.

The gearbox front cover with the pivot for the ribcase is part 22G118. Confirm this, too, before looking elsewhere.

The only roller bearing we sell has to be used with a particular pressure plate that has the center part removed where a carbon bearing would ride since the roller bearing is so much taller than the standard release bearing. My guess is this is your mismatch. If the clutch package is at all worn it may be best to get a new kit so that you know the clutch disc, pressure plate, and bearing will all work together as they should.

Here's a page from Gerard's Garage that shows a lot of these components and the differences between them (FYI):

Remove the flywheel, back plate, sump and the half-round cover, secured to the block by 3 bolts, above the main bearing cap (MBC). Carefully clean up the rear block face area adjacent to the MBC (Fig. 1 A); removing all traces of gasket, burrs, etc.; also the outer, horizontal edge of the flywheel mounting flange on the crank. This is where the new oil seal will seat; it will need to be checked for damage and carefully polished smooth with wire wool or fine emery.
