This factory water-to-oil Oil Cooler / Heat exchanger on the Cooper S models uses the engine coolant to help raise oil temperature when the car is cold, and helps reduce the oil temperature when the engine is hot. Unit is mounted to the base of the oil filter cannister.

Although these seals appear 'round' in shape in the photo, once you fit them into the groove on the oil filter base, they will take the 'oval' shape.
