CAUTION: NEVER open the expansion tank cap when the engine is hot!! Wait until the engine is cool to the touch.

If your MINI Cooper was produced before 2005 it is likely that the radiator Expansion Tank will crack along the seams due to heat and pressure build up. All factory Original parts now supplied are an improved design that greatly reduces the chase of this happening again. Keep an eye on the later ones as it could happen that you find yourself down on water. The good news is that the leak is typically very small and thus a very slow leak. The bad news is that it will be hard to see and thus even if you have a later model car that always seem to need water- Replace the Radiator Expansion Tank before it is too late. The other good news is that the replacement tank is relatively inexpensive and can be changed in under 30 minutes.
