Question:
I have f56 , but the dealer say have oil leak around the valve cover and they say I have to replace not only the gasket they say I have to replace the valve cover, is the 1st time I heard that, say need an upgrade, I don't know if is true, I think I need only a gasket, please let me know
Answer:
It is hard to say without knowing exactly where the oil is leaking from. If the oil is leaking from the valve cover gasket, then it would make sense that only the valve cover gasket needs replacing.
However the valve cover has multiple functions built-in:
• Sealing the top of the cylinder head from the outside
• Sound insulation
• Accommodation of crankcase breather outlet
• Accommodation of oil separation system
• Accommodation of pressure relief valve for crankshaft venting system
• Attachment of sensors
• Attachment of cable guides
• Shielding of outside from electromagnetic waves produced by the ignition coils
(electromagnetic compatibility, EMC).
• Accommodation of ignition coils
It is possible that the oil can be leaking from someplace other than the valve cover gasket, or perhaps one of the built-in features has also failed...
However the valve cover has multiple functions built-in:
