The eccentric shaft sensor detects the angle of rotation of the eccentric shaft and thus supplies the actual-position data for the control system.
The position of the eccentric shaft is reported by the eccentric shaft sensor of the Digital Engine Electronics (DME). It has a detection range of 180 °.

NOTE: Valvetronic / VANOS is BMW's version of the variable cam timing technology. Valvetronic varies the amount of valve lift while VANOS varies the duration of the valve opening / closing / overlap.
