MINI factory replacement OEM Decoupling Element or Flex Joint.  This is the wire mesh contraption at the flange which allows 'flex' to accommodate the engine movement without stressing the exhaust system.

If this flex joint has failed on your MINI, this factory replacement part will allow you to repair your existing exhaust without having to replace the entire exhaust system which can be very expensive.  You will need a qualified muffler shop to cut the old joint out, and weld this unit in.
