When inspecting 2nd or 3rd gear as used in the ribcase gearbox be sure to look harder at the small teeth than at the large ones. The large teeth do indeed carry all the load when fully engaged BUT the little teeth take the abuse and are 90% of the reason the gear ever needs replacing. These teeth should have a point on the end and not be all rounded off. As the shift lever is moved the slider engages these teeth to activate the gear and when they are worn down the tranny has a tendency to pop out of gear! Helical cut gear, 24 teeth.
