Question:
I suspect I have a steering rack problem. I hit a large pothole on the right side, bottomed the suspension, mushroomed the spring towers. I straightened the towers added tower reinforcing kit. Installed bilstein touring shocks reinspected and aligned. The steering is quick but feels loose and unpredictable. Turning end to end there is approx 3/8" play. Is this my problem?
Answer:
A small amount of play with the engine off, is normal.
For loose and unpredictable steering, you might check all the steering components including the steering column, steering box, tie rod ends, etc. Also check for play with the front lower control arm rear bushing - this is a fluid filled bushing that can loose the fluid over time.
I presume you inspected or replaced the front strut top mount / guide support.
