On the earlier Gen 2 Cooper S models, the factory added a 'Noise Generator' along the intake piping to manipulate the intake sounds from the engine. Although this may seem innocuous, it adds volume to the intake piping which means more air to compress for boost. By eliminating this Noise Generator and associated piping, you reduce the intake volume and improve the flow.
