Last time I did my water pump in my 75 was the same way. Left the bottom hose clamp on tight. If the hose came off after install it is a royal pain the arse to get it back on and hold the clamp it right place to be able tighten it.

FYI. 1275 A+ water pump leak. Advice I got (and videos watched) was to disconnect lower hose before removing radiator. Surely someone else has done it the way i did.
That's a tough clamp nut to unwind in a tight space. It was MUCH easier this way. I left the clamp tight and the hose attached to the radiator.
Easier on the bench, I did replace the hose with a new one even though the old one was still very soft and pliable.
