It might be $8000 in Utah, but that translates to £6,400 and it simply isn't worth that much money here.

beane1.. I really do NOT think you are going to get $8000 for mini in JAIL with CBP.. and then have to ship back to the UK on their DIME.  assume you would have to pay VAT to import if NOT 30 years and older?? bc

guys..  thinks have really changed in last few years.. first there was TWIC cards.. then SCAC cards and then ACE approval.  then  US CUSTOMS 10 +2 ISF.. filing  2 days PRIOR to being shipping from foreign port.. then   CBP/ DHS.. listening to BAD info from Jag/ Land rover  North America and they jumped up and SEIZED 78 land rover 90/110 that Dr Aaron Richardt / GB 4X4 ( patterson auto sales) in Wilimington NC..  and then thanks to Pro Bono work of the Defender of the Defenders.. Will Hendrick .. ALL the 78 land rover were returned to their owners last year..  ever since then..  CBP has gone to the LETTER of the law.. over enforcing the all imported vehicles MUST be ALL original with OEM. engines. trannys, glass, headlights,  seat belts.  and even doors.  just way of life.. and this is NOT going to change  any time soon IF EVER..  deal with it..importing NOW is NOT for amateurs  or arm chair experts..  too many things can go horribly wrong..    later bc

jemal. you must get PRIOR approval for Show and display NOW. prior to importing from DOT ( NHTSA ) and EPA.. and I heard recently after Universal studies sold OFF the 34 nissan skyline they import for the Fast and Furious films..   there is almost NO CHANCE to do this now. UNLESS you are a manufacture..  later  bc

I think most of the car is OEM including the engine, suspension, subframes, metal parts, rear seat, windshield, gauges, brakes, floors, steering and sub-frame. It has just had 3' cut out and new paint and body work.

That is on of the things I have ask for, apparently you are suppose to get this approved before you import it.
i would be happy to get it classified that way.
there is one for show and display but the customs guy told me you had to be a non profit? It doesn't say that on the application.

I would get your broker to try for a permit that expressly states it will NOT be used on US roads or highway!  There is a way to bring cars in as "show" or "experimental" or "R&D Only.  Usually there is a time frame that must be adhered to and they will follow up to see that the car has been taken out of the country (or hopefully just the state of California!)

We used this process to import the very first MINI to the US.  We brought a 2001 Base Model R50 MINI Cooper under such a permit to SFO on a Virgin 747.... It was just a right hand drive English model, but our permit allowed us one year in California for "R&D".  We sold the car to the Virgin Islands to get it out of the country.   This difference here is that your 1988 would be fine in most of the USA, as it's well over 25 years old!   But looks like a special interest show car to me!!

spank... can NOT be exported to canada..   think the wording with CBP..is    NO shipment to co-joining ( sp?)countries..  ( which means. NOT mexico or canada...  this can be imported as motor vehicle parts. Box 2 A on the DOT. and then box W for  EPA.. no engine and tranny.. and taken to local Foreign Trade Zone and a Manipulation done. to take off the engine /tranny and NON DOT   original items..  I just did two MGFs for friend recently  ..   also you can apply for mitigated   forfeiture  which you agree to pay 25% value of vehicle and then DOUBLE the DUTY. and you can keep the vehicle in the USA. I have done this recently also.. later  bc  PS  I have the CBP forms for BOTH..

this guy owns a pink miniature mini propelled by nitro, he's been into every single brighton mini run every year, his face is all over the place in anything mini related, he has a shop in London, one acre of land full of minis, mini parts, people goes to him for parts, sadly he lives in GB not in US, otherwise i'll be visiting his shop everyday., But yah, i haven't seen one of those little chopped minis in person but sure looks cool in the picture. someone mention about port of washington, i believe that plce is TWW's teritory, he's been trading, buying minis and other british cars all his life, he knows a lot of people in that Port., you can contact him for moral support or whatever support you need. he also sells 998 engines for 700 bucks. (with a compression of 230psi with oil, and 50psi without oil) annyway, i only wish you good luck in your mini venture, i'm positive you can bring it to the US soon...

I have imported minis and Morris minors in the past but its been 3 year since the last. I was just planing on using it for car shows i dont even know if i will fit in it, I'm 6'3" tall.
my broker sent me an email that there was a problem about the same time i walked into customs. I told her it had been shortened in an email and she didn't say much about it.
i thought that it would meet the over 25 year old thing but i new nothing about the modification rules.
i guess if my congresswomen cant help it will be going back, it cant even go to Canada or Mexico it has to go across the pond.
I will check into the ebay policy's on advertising it for the US and not being able to keep it.
thanks for all the input.
i do know someone in CA. That brought in a shorty from Scotland last July same port with no problems.
