Anyway, I am wondering if running the engine at 4,000 on the freeway for periods of 40 minutes or so will be a problem. I use Valvoline 20-50 racing oil, the engine has 140 lbs compression in each cyl.  Does not use oil and is VERY smooth at 4K rpm....What is the max recommended rpm to run for long periods on a trip of about 120 miles or so? No weird noises, runs like a fine watch...any ideas??  Is there a thread about this?

Thanks to all that respond

PS: engine is a 1380 with kent 276 cam.

You are fine.....sounds like you have a 2:76 FD.  I sold one of those a couple years ago...didn't realise they were in such demand.

I have a 3:1 fitted in one of my MINIs with a 1130 engine.  It will cruise all day at around 3,400rpm ( ~100-110 ).
I also have a 3:1 fitted to a tired old 998 in the PUP....also great....but doesn't like climbing mountains...lol

My Riley has a 2.76 final drive as used in the French Minis. 3000 rpm is 66mph on  165/70/10 Falkens and I had the speedo recalibrated in the UK and it is bang on. No problem cruising at that speed here . There is always someone wanting to go faster.

100 kph = 62 mph

I frequently read/hear reports from proud Mini thrashers, that the A-series will run long periods at high revs, the fact is, High revs reduce the life of any engine.  However, Minis in the US are typically not driven the number of miles that a daily driver/family car is, so 3,000 miles a year still might get you many years of engine flogging. Mini power trains are often rebuilt at 25 to 50 thousand miles, they don't go 150,000 to 300,000 miles like more modern engines.

personally, I have logged less than 10,000 miles total on all the A-series Minis I have owned in the past 20 years; apparantly never had a "good" one, because I spent about tripple the driving time, just working to keep them running, so I rarely cruised above 3,800 RPM, and never shifted at over 5,500.

With a 1275 and 3.1fd, my car has a nice sweet spot at 5000rmp even which the gps says is 84mph....and another sweet spot at 5400...abt 94mph....and it has been happy as a clam at those speeds for 12/14 hrs at a stretch...for years...

Been there, done that. Stay in California, don't believe the hype.

Texas metro areas like in Dallas where I lived just has as worse if not even worse traffic than LA. The good thing about California is that you're not sitting on a freaking toll road.

You can go as fast as is legal in Utah and Texas without any issues.

Twin tanks and 2.95 I have made four hour run to VIR many times. No tach no water temp no radio just me and the road at or around 70 mph.

I have sound deadening, undercoating and recent RPM reduction as well as new exhaust still not happy with the racket at 70 mph. I'm thinking wind noise is the next issue.

I have a similar Mini and on trips to the CMU events in the mountains from Miami, we routinely drive at 80 - 85 mph, for about 2.5 hours as that's how long the fuel lasts between stops, hums right along at over 4000 rpm's

same here, 3.44 diff, 110km/h at around 4300rpm on 10in wheels for 45minutes to an hour on the highway without any problem. 1275 S engine bored +040, SW5 cam. Like DR said, only issue is cabin noise, but then again i dont have much sound deadning.

i once drove my italian market mayfair (998cc, 2.9diff, 12in wheels) from sherbrooke to montreal (150km) with the pedal to the metal (literally) and it did 130km/h on the flat. nice thing is that my foot wouldnt cramp up since it was flat against the floor

Mine runs a 3.647 diff, and at 110KMH by my GPS in 4th gear (10" wheels) it's doing 4,600 rpm. I run it a couple hundreds of miles each way when I go to race meetings, not had a problem. Except cabin noise (the 45 Dellorto carb makes it a bit loud).
