I have the rectangular one on the seam of my LHD 67 Cooper S and it is the only outside mirror on the car.  It works well as a supplement to the inside the car mirror.

That is good to hear. I will have one soon. Gotta get ready for the Smokies in April.

You have to remove the bracket that clips it on to "normal" cars. Two screws hold it on, then you will have to drill two holes in the upper door frame of the Mini and use two screws to install it on a Mini. If drilling the holes isn't an option, then it won't work.

Thank you, Martin! Until your post, I still couldn't figure out WTH it was all about.

Brad, I've never used one, but wouldn't be prone to have it as my only mirror.

I just googled it...

"Mirror mystery solved! It's a passing mirror for looking around cars that block your view of the oncoming traffic!"

I've never seen the likes of this before!

'JEGS' sells some pretty cool clip side mirrors. (I think they have this one in 3 inch as well?) Check it out. Universal right or left mount.

Yeah, finally. That's it. Willie, why wouldn't that work on a RHD Mini? That would let you see the left hand lane from the RH seat. I think that would be the real deal for a RHD Mini.....

That's pretty cool. Learned something new today. Just that would not work too well on a RHD mini in the US.

Just mounted one of those on Simon's Aussie '68 S, but I don't see how it's any advantage to "overtaking" or why it's called such.

The ad just shows both sides of the one mirror. Only using one mirror on the drivers door mounted on the seam near the top of the door.

I think the fact that this is two mirrors (as described in ebay post) means that it is what I was describing. The one facing rearward (like normal "rear-view" mirror) actually looks into a forward facing mirror surface, thereby giving you a look ahead, but from the outside of the car, i.e., why they are called "overtaking mirrors." Somewhere I have a picture of one on a '50s car because I was so surprised to see one from my dad's era.

The type that attachs to the seam. Stadium was a brand name that made them. Like this://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/MINI-Classic-ROUND-Overtaking-Mirror-Clip-/220789205677?pt=UK_CarsParts_Vehicles_CarParts_SM&hash=item33680feaad

Willie,

I think that we are not all sure what you are talking about. Can you post some photos?

(interesting how every post so far has started with, "I think (he means)...")

I think an overtaking mirror is something I remember from the '50s or '60s. It's a mirror that reflects back into a forward-facing mirror so that you have a better look around the truck in front of you. I didn't know they were still around.

Stadium is a British brand of mirrors.  I believe he is referring to the clip-on style of mirror that was made by Stadium.

By stadium mirror, I expect he is referring to the "wink" mirror which is panoramic. Seen them, but never used one. One bloke has similar in his Honda Element, but it requires the sun visors in the down position always..

If by overtaking mirror you are referring to the aftermarket mirror that mounts onto the seam they work well imo. One of the good points is you can mount it at any height you wish on the seam to get the best view out of it.

I am thinking of getting rid of my door mirror and switching to an overtaking mirror. Can anyone that has used one of those comment on how useful they are and would this be a good idea. Just wanting to change things a little for a different look is all. Thanks for the input.
