Well, that's probably a better idea.  It's best to learn on an already-built car anyway.  You deserve to drive around and have some fun first anyhow.

You'll have an absolute blast when you get your Mk.1 - get ready to be a rock star.   The waves, smiles and compliments will blow your mind.  This weekend I was invited to show at the Pleasanton Scottish Games for 2 days in front of 30,000 people.

I finally decided to sell the project car. It does deserve a better owner that have all the resources and knowledge about the car. Thank you to everyone that helped and offered information. I a much wiser mini buyer now and will be adding cash on top of the cash I'll get after selling the mini. The new owner is going to be stripping the mini down to bare metal and restore it the right away. I will not disclose where he will be taking the mini but it's going to have a great owner.

As for those I bugged constantly, please forgive me for being a nuisance. I have a great urgency on my lap and so I cannot keep the mini sitting in the driveway anymore.

I do make a decent living and I did saved extra money on the side that I'd be adding to the cash I'm getting from the project mini. I'd like to buy a rust free (or a little rust) running mk1 (ideally) with clean California title that I don't need to smog. Please send them my way. Thank you.

Armycook, we all know what to look for, when we buy our second mini!  Don't give up so easily or be discouraged. I have a rust bucket that I drive daily, but it's my rust bucket!  My wife said that she wanted me to get a mini I didn't have to work on.  There's no such thing, I said.  That's the point.  You have offers of help, if needed, the Haynes manual is very helpful, except for the "installation is the reverse of removal".  You will definitely have a sense of accomplishment.  Even when my mini was off road for 6 months, it made me smile just seeing it in the driveway.  Once you get your hands wet, you will see how simple and yet amazing the design of these cars really are.  Go for it!

Hehe... I know... Makes me want to sell it for parts now seriously. Thought I know everything but I guess not. Oh well. I'll charge it to experience. I'm a much wiser mini buyer now. Never again will I buy someone else's headache.

Hahaha. At the beginning of my build, I had a strict budget of $1800 for the motor and trans. And I was going to make that budget work.  But now that I have some more income to play with... well why not.

But I don't think Specialist Components will trade a $2000 fuel injectiin and engine management system for my old cell phone. Haha. Maybe I'll send them an email and ask.

Armycook, a 1380 is not a bad route to go if you want fun power and not all the hassle of modifying the car to accept the motor. It will drop right in.

You can get one built for around $1.5k

I'll take 10 at that price, please.

That price is very do-able, Spank. You just have to nearly everything yourself. If you look hard enough, you can find the block and trans for $400 (it absolutely can be done), machine shop work will be around $300, add pistons, good used carb, and some other refreshers and you're at around $1.5k.

Now if you want to do something like I'm doing with fuel injection, straight cut gears, new crank, new head, and all the bells and whistles... You can plan for somewhere around the cost of some guys entire car. Haha.

All depends on how much you are willing to spend and realistic goals/timelines/personal abilities.

I call bullsh!t. You are obviously not holding yourself to the same expectations/standards as you are holding this Mini newbie. You, as a mini veteran, should be able to build that for free. Don't let THIS KID show you up.

You can get one built for around $1.5k, or go all out and spend a few grand on just the motor. Still chapter than the vtec.

My brother has a 1380, it flys. The most important thing to remember on any engine build is your final drive. He has a 2.95, he loves it on the freeway, power with high end.

I don't blame George; the law is the law.  But yes Carl, voters of this state are the experts at imposing laws and taxes on the other guy.

Up north San Franscico area law officers. The owner kept his wheels, lights, radio and othe misc stuff. First time I've seen it done like that. I have another video of two excavators pulling a mini apart, and pictures of your typical crushed.

Thanks George - my mouth just dropped wide open.

I would have thought that "crushing a vehicle" meant dropping it in one of those junk yard crushers where you get a nice rectangular block afterwards.  I can't believe you just have them dropped on their roof from like 15 feet.

I'd assume with this method there are many good parts leftover?

The bureaucracy of this country never ceases to amaze me.
