Oh yeah Dan - the oil seals!  Definitely.  OK Deutsche Dan - you have a valve spring compressor right?

By the way I found Oven Cleaner is good for removing a nice paint job and that's all.

I think the answers are "yes", "probably" and "yep!"

Those pistons look kinda black and crunchy on top. Combustion chambers probably match. I'd have a close look at the valves and seats and maybe do at least a light touch-up. Of course then Pandora would want to know about the guides and seals... and.... and......

Do we want to suggest Dan do some gentle decarbonizing and maybe a valve lap - or is that opening the "while I've got it apart" Pandora's box?

What's the group opinion on using a sanding block - I use 600 and a block.  Also I clean the hell out of the engine and compartment before opening it up.

As Cupcake has indicated different headgaskets require different procces check with the manufacturer before fitting wet or dry!

It could be the extra plate is to prevent the throttle quadrant from hitting the manifold.

If yor new head gasket is copper I would use copper head gasket sealant.

The car drove fine with the hole "plugged" before, so I'm wondering if I should just leave it the way it is, or spend some time to "un-gunk" it...

2.  I'm going to install a K&N Cone air filter fairly soon, but noticed I don't have as much space on my carb as other minis I've seen. Can it be that my carb (Hif44) has one or two extra "plates" installed into it as per the picture below?  One appears to be the screw that holds the air filter in place, and the second appears to be a rubber type plate.

3. As far as the headgasket, I've decided to put it on "wet" instead of dry this time. My question is, what is the correct procedure for this?  Do you put the Permatex gasket sealer onto the engine block, then put the head gasket onto it, then apply another layer of sealant onto the upper side of the head gasket, and then place the head onto the entire thing? Or do you just put the sealer onto one of the sides of the head gasket? And if so, the underside of the gasket, or the top side?

Sorry for all the questions,

Dan

I would get the gunk out of the hole as that is a water jacket. The small black spacer plate has been added for what looks like a vacumm port, if you don't need the port get rid of it. DO NOT use any type of sealer on the head gasket it needs to be dry. I would make sure the block is nice and flat by removing the studs and sanding it down using wet sandpaper with some thin oil on it works best for me. If this has happened before i would get the head checked and see if it needs skimming a few thou or not.
