Apparently six Land Rovers have been returned to their owners with another 25 or so to be returned this week, someone dropped the ball i guess. Now if only the illegal aliens were that easy to give back.

If in doubt, flat out. Colin Mc Rae MBE 1968-2007.

Sobering news on the Defenders. I'm assuming that the 500 inported 1993 Defender 110's are still all safe and good??? The Wifey and I almost bought one about 15 years ago. I voted that machine the most awesome vehicle on 4 tires! The ultimate SUV to be sure. The only other vehicle that could hold a candle to it would probably be one of the rare Classic Land Rover Campers, (what were they called again???) Oh yeah, a 'DorMobile'! Anyway, we were looking at both vehicles around the same time to buy. Ended up buying 1988 Range Rover in perfect condition, with a matching silver 1974 Jaguar XJ6. Both beautiful vehicles. Lotsa great memories. Yes, and I already had Mini's that had my Garage walls buldging! HA!                  Mini Estate

P.S. Remember, the British Defender is the official Hummer recovery vehicle!!!

According to the Fed website, the statute of limitations for things like that is 5 years. I wonder if that would make any difference if someone running around with an MPI / AC / Airbag mini got scooped up, but they'd owned it for more than 5 years?

But they wouldn't scoop it. The aliens & the Rover would probably be flown to relatives in Ohio and given citizenship & the LR would become an "undoccumented Rover".

But remember, Political correctness, trumps all. !!!!!!!

So, if Homeland security could scoop a Land Rover defender full of underage illegal aliens! it would be a plus ????

I don't want to even get in to the immigration debate, but I have to say that he complete imbalance of priorities does seem crazy racingflea.

I would however suggest that it when it comes to do-ability and political deviseness of both issues, the vehicular one seems much more solve-able and less likely to be a stumbling block in a politicians career.

Hey Bill,

Appreciate the offer - I'm not in the market just yet. Last two Rovers I imported, I had my father purchase one in the UK, to have the V5 in his name when exported, and give time to ensure all is legit and numbers matching (he also used them for a few months). Added bonus is it is "purchased from an immediate family member" so has the obvious benefits at the tax office...

Think I'll hold off importing one till all this nonsense has blown over.... That they are impounding 100% legal models (one I read on a different forum claimed to still have factory wheels, and even the asthmatic 2.5 diesel, and hadn't been "tarted up"), it seems to be a very strange state of over-reach that we can't ultimately do anything about.Frown

Bill, In your opinion, what is the likelyhood of folks who imported stock and legal defenders like this (who didn't use Aaron) of getting their vehicles back?

Dave, they will likely get those Land Rovers back as long as everthing major mechanical is 25 years old. One of the problems on the import of any vehicle into the US is when the runnig gear has been switched out to later specs and does not conform to the 25 yo rule. Lets face it a 4 cylinder 2.25 Landie won't get out of its own way and does not have much appeal to the average US buyer but with the 200 TDI diesel engine and later transmissions or bigger or even the Rover 3.5 V8 they become a lot more "driveable" and to much bigger audience, and that is probably why there are stolen engines used as the greed factor kicks in. The trouble with the wheels of justice is they seem to move very slow when it comes to getting cars or personal belongings back to rightful owners, a lot slower than it took to pick them up that is for sure.

If in doubt, flat out. Colin Mc Rae MBE 1968-2007.

//jalopnik.com/the-feds-just-seized-40-land-rovers-imported-to-the-u-s-1605985758

Given how many "late model" defenders I've seen masquerading as earlier versions this is perhaps warranted, but the scale of the investigation is suprising...

Seems it was a dragnet on every defender imported / sold by a particular dealer in NC. Some of the siezed vehicles did appear to be genuinely "legal" (early/mid 80's) versions however.
