As long as the guy knows what era of parts to order who gives a rat's arse what he "believes" the year is?
There's a possiblity that he's heard the horror stories of cars being impounded/crushed and will not reveal what he actually knows to anyone.....

I know the owner of this car as he is local to me. Still haven't been able to see it in the flesh, but looks like a very nice Mini, but yea... I am still not convinced. It has an MPI engine as well correct? Or SPI? Would love to see the firewall as well. Anything is possible with enough cash thrown at it, nothing suprises me these days, but still hard to believe.

Looks like they made it look newer by removing the drip rail as well.
That door conversion looks like it was done very well.

A local guy brought his mini to cars and coffee. He just bought it as a 1966, and when a few people started saying it's not a 66, he kept disagreeing. He is convinced it is a 66 that someone paid $50K to restore to newer specs. He was told that the body is not new, but the newer doors were put in the 66 shell. I don't care, but someone convinced him that it's a 66 that was sent to Downton in the UK and restored..
