malsal,

I originally thought of doing that but with the additional width of the 9US gallon tank you would no longer be supporting it properly and most of the weight would be toward the center of the boot eventually stretching or breaking the 7 gal tank strap.

Thanks for all the help everyone!

Seriously !!!! Even Austin Morris as cheap as they were would not design a strap to fail with an extra 16LBS floating around, just look at how thin and flimsy the new straps are compared to the old ones which are about three times the thickness. Not to mention the tank will hardly move around due to the filler neck angle and the fact the one i converted has been driving around the last 6 years with no problems.

If only for asthetics the original tank strap is far better.

No problems just my 02c.

I tried to use the straps from the 7 gallon tank but they are too short.  I ordered the 9gallon tank strap but it doesnt reach all the way around the tank so i'm assuming that something mounts to the boot where the regular tank strap mounts and allows you to fasten to the new strap to cinch down the tank.

Did you try to install the strap the way the orignal tank was mounted ? It should work that way as the 9 gallon tank is not larger than the 7 gallon one in the area where the strap originally fastened.

I know the Innocenti tanks fit differently, perhaps the Authi ones do to.

Correct hey are different Alex. The larger tank attaches diagonally across the front edge wheras the smaller tank attaches across the top and down the side of the tank. The dimension difference is from the seam into the trunk space over the spare wheel so the older strap works on both applications as where it fits both tanks are the same dimensions (well it did on the 75 UK Mini i converted).

I am not up to speed on the Innocenti / Authi tanks.

I

Looking at the tank from inside the trunk it attaches from the top right of the tank to the bottom left side of the tank. FWIW you can use the old tank strap off the smaller tank which imo is a lot tidier than the newer one.
