As kd says, yeah I am thinking a door guard would be nice, it looks like it really saved the day.  Would you guys agree the minivan came at him from the left rear?  That is sure the nightmare scenario.

Todd looking at the damage with the wheel pushed back and the floor and dash rail pushed up i would think the point of impact was the left front.

If in doubt, flat out. Colin Mc Rae MBE 1968-2007.

This is copy pasted from the Oregon Mini society News Letter:

If you would like to send some cheerful words to Craig, you can send them to: house.[email protected]. I don’t think he would mind
hearing from everyone! Ed. As an aside, when asked a question that I have always pondered - and never wished to test, Craig answered:
Does a Mini ‘bounce’?
Thanks Chris! Yes, I do believe Winston "bounced off", as when I came to a stop, he was a good 50 feet from the mini
Van!

That probably saved my life.

I was accelerating and turning right totry an minimize the crunch, but she also kept accelerating!
I had to reach overand shut down the motor as with a crunched footbox,
the accelerator was floored.

Once I can, we'll disassemble Winnie for spare parts - can't lose
what's left!

This is not the first time that we have seen a really bad hit and the driver survives.

Canadian Minis after 1974 had a door guard built into the door.

These doors weighed a lot more but the bar does its job.

It is remarkable to see how well this little old Mini stood up to that Mini van.

Here's Craig's awesome 1010 sq. ft. ManCave in Arizona. I don't think he'd mind me sharing this. 'Winston' is pulled way up front, (pre-crash) Get well Craig! Oh yeah, Craig's wife Jane, she loves a good novel. Unfortunately she found out the hard way that the house spiders there tend to grow rather large in the Arizona heat. Craig prefers a little body armour and a very large sword to keep them ay bay! Get well Craig!             Mini Estate

Hey George,

Let us know if we can do anything for Craig.  Even good wishes from us fellow Mini owners.  Cards, letters, emails, tweets, anything you may think will make him feel better.

Any crash in a Mini is scary.  Glad Craig is up and moving about.   Jim

Winston LHD, and Ozzie RHD. Winston's pretty much totaled. Craig has mentioned parting it out, but he's just in the past couple days home from the hospital and managing with a walker. Leg, pelvis, etc., t-boned by an 82 yr-old lady in a mini-van. Car is in the Tucson area. I can't imagine he's thinking much right now about the parting out job, but I'll let him know there's interest. [edit] He says at least four months away from any of that.

Hmmm... I'm pretty sure Craig & Jane had (2) Classic Mini's, one named 'Winston', the other named '?????'. I thought they both were right hand drive Aussie models??? I'm seeing a left hand drive here with sliding windows??? Was this D*** of OMS fame's old Mini??? (I can't remember his last name?) Somebody chime in please. Thanks.                                                                      Mini Estate

I'm not giving out his email as he's still on the mend.                               Mini Estate

I hope he is ok, or getting well. Thanks.

Any info on the owner with the crashed mini in Arizona. Like to see if the owner would like to sell the parts.

Thanks

George
