OK, Heres the deal.  Our club member  is an engineer by trade and did this incredibely awesome design.  So, originally, D*** would crawl out the the back window after loaded.  Now, he has a winch to do the job. Ya gotta love  it.  Sorry the pic#3 does not have a good resolution but if you look closeley, you can see his feet hanging out the back of the rear quarter window as he's crawling out. Fun stuff.

Ah, the AAA deal isn't as useful for your purpose (needing a round trip). It includes one per year with membership. The original poster just needed to get a car from his brother's house to his own, so he could repair it, and presumably drive it back to his brother's house.

How far are you towing the vehicle? With AAA premier, for $129, you can get a free 200 mile tow.

I broke the rear end (the brake drum/hub broke) of my 4x4 van in the middle of a trip. AAA picked us up, towed us 50 miles to my parents' place, we moved everything from my van to my dad's truck, and we went skiing for the weekend, while AAA towed my van 140 more miles back to my home.

Wave...That must be one pretty fast hovercraft to get across the pond in six hours.

Al...If I were closer I'd take one of the two in a heartbeat!

If everything is okay on the Mini, flat towing shouldn't have any real effect on wheel bearings or alignment... Unless you're planning on towing 20,000-30,000 miles. Then, normal maintenence procedures would be in order....
As far as the plus and minus of various methods of moving a Mini around;
If the car is drivable do that.... unless things like life get in the way and it's more practical to tow...

Towbar with all four wheels of the towed car on the ground:
Added wear 'n tear to the tow & towed vehicle. No brakes on the towed vehicle. Cannot back up without unhitching & re-hitching. If something goes tits up on the front or rear suspension, you're pretty much screwed and either have to effect repairs or find another way of getting the Mini home.

Tow dolly with the rear wheels of the towed car on the ground:
Added wear 'n tear to the tow & towed vehicle. No brakes on the towed vehicle. Cannot back up without unhitching & re-hitching. If something goes tits up on the  rear suspension, you're pretty much screwed and either have to effect repairs or find another way of getting the Mini home.

Trailer with all four wheels of the towed car off the ground:
Much more wear 'n tear to the towing vehicle and it has to be capable of the bigger load. Can be backed up but takes a bit of practice. If anything goes tits up on the Mini, you can push (hand bomb) the remains on the trailer.

My galvanized tow dolly has hydraulic surge brakes and torsion suspension but it was not one of the cheapies you see for $1000.

My Trailex one car two axle aluminum trailer weighs the same as my tow dolly around 780 lbs. I have pulled both of them to TN and NC with a HHR 2.2 liter normally i use a 5.7 GMC 1500.

Then South Carolina would be farther. I can't compete with Big Al, I'm afraid. The trailer cost me 2800 to have built, but I'd start the negotiating at 1800. (Then I'd go buy one of Big Al's and pocket the change)

waverider-

O K- I will get you a pic of the lighter one of the two-

I owned this trailer for 6 years and it served me well, put thousands of miles on it-Then, l got a double trailer also specific to minis, so l sold the single to a mini friend locally, after l sold him 3 minis, he felt he wanted a double so he sold me back the single- It was a bonus for me as he re-wired it, put a tool box on it (cargo box), new ramps, new paint , a hand winch, and a lot of welding-

It tows real easy and can handle any mini-

I am firm at $1,200.00 and you can pick it up in either Buffalo or Niagara Falls NY-

Hey Big Al,

Do you have some pictures. Maybe I can convince the wife to take the 6hr drive with me. I have been going to the British Invasion in Stowe and will need somthing in the summer, around September time. I tried the Uhaul last year and it was nerve racking to be honest. Getting it on was tight and I found that if your not on hard ground the Mini bottoms out a bit when you putting it back on. Someone told me to try and rest the ramps on a ledge or somthing, but when you are in a field at a show it is easier said than done.

Red Riley,
Nice trailer. If only we were closer, North Carolina might be a bit of a trek. How much do you want for it?

'Concealment,' clever! Though, when I 'off-handedly' made mention to 'U-Haul' of transporting a very small car 'inside' one of their trucks, they 'assured' me that 'I'd have no insurance coverage' for the truck or [my] contents.'        Unless you have a flat-bed/tilt 'recovery vehicle-like "AAA' to use,  The 'tandem axle' trailer is the way to go.  Their 'tracking' and the reversing of one is much easier & safer than single axle jobs.  Besides, If kept in decent form, they don't loose their value anything like say, a 'new car!

W/that in mind, Big Al's offer at $1.200, I think it's money well spent. 'You Could Say Hello To a Good Buy!'

I have a custom built (for a Mini) trailer that I'd like to sell, since it's built so well that it's a bit on the heavy side for my Toyota Tacoma to pull.
